Karuppu, which featured Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, debuted in theatres on 15th May after being subjected to last minute schedule changes, financial issues and row cancelled movie screenings before its release. Even if the showing was marred with its flaws, the action drama still opened big screens right from Tamilnadu theatrically and had fan frenzies everywhere.
The movie has grossed approximately ₹14.40 crore in India on its first day, according to early box office estimates, across almost 4,900 theatres. The film managed audience attendance of more than 50 per cent, and was increasingly over at the box office throughout the day. Morning screenings had moderate taker, with evening and night screenings having an excellent taker disportiontional to the level of occupancy, reportedly at over 75 per cent for evening screenings and over 80 per cent for night screenings.
The film also did better on an international stage as it managed to gross around ₹4crore abroad and went to witness a day-one worldwide gross of around ₹20.66 crore.
But, despite this performance, Karuppu was unable to outperform the previous fantasy action movie Kanguva (2024), which grossed ₹22 crore nett in total on the first day of its release in India; the film is also Suriya’s biggest opening ever.
The film is the first time Suriya and Trisha reunited on screen since 2005’s Aaru. Prior to the release, there were concerns from fans and financial difficulties reportedly from the Dream Warrior Pictures’s producer SR Prabhu with regard to several screenings.
Following the confirmation of the release, Suriya thanked fans on social media for their support for the film and partying through the anxiety beset by the film’s release.
