If the Government does not give assurances on the key demands of the Ladakh region within one week, then it will initiate a fresh agitation in the Ladakh region from September 19, Sonam Wangchuk, the educationalist and social activist, has threatened.
Wangchuk’s caution is at a time when the regional bodies’ demands on issues of political representation, constitutional guarantees, political and legal matters etc. of the valley continue to cause concerns. He has invited the government to give him the answers in the specified time and clarity regarding the future plan.
The agitation is likely to add strain to the Centre over worries of UT residents. Wangchuk is not new to the movement for better Constitutional and Governmental protection for Ladakh after it was promoted to UT in 2019.
The new advisory marks a renewed escalation if there is no action by the government within the next week. The Ladakh demand could again be put under the lens of the national agenda with the agitation expected to take place from tomorrow, 19th, through Friday, 24th of September for five days.
The development is being seen as a result of the efforts of representatives from Ladakh of asking for more political protection and safety for Ladakh’s interests. However, Wangchuk has insisted that “compelling assurances from the government” would be determinant in preventing yet another protest.
The eye is now on the Centre as the deadline nears and whether it would respond to the demands and thereby choke off the proposed agitation.
