New Delhi: Thursday saw the highly charged deliberations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education in response to the phrase “paper leak,” as officials from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs strongly disagreed with its use.

The meeting had been called in light of the NEET-UG examination conducted by the agency, which had recently seen several allegations of breach, thus leading to its cancellation and a plan to reconduct the exam. It is reported that the dispute started when members were going through an agenda paper for the meeting, which mentioned “paper leak,” a phrase vehemently disputed by the BJP MPs, who stated that the use of this terminology at this point would be incorrect and premature.

Supporting their claims, NTA Director General Abhishek Singh gave a thorough briefing to the committee stating that there was no case of “leak” for the NEET-UG examination cancellation.

The NTA justified the scrapping of the May 3 test, which included around 2.3 million students, by citing this step as a safety measure undertaken due to the inputs regarding “irregularities and malpractices” received from law enforcement agencies.

The opposition members in the committee strongly challenged the stance of NTA, asking why such a nation-wide re-test was required in case the problem pertained to something internal. NTA explained that the matter was being investigated independently by CBI to look into any outside involvement in the affair. While the government makes efforts to implement structural reforms, including computer-based tests for future editions, the semantic war fought in the parliament committee highlights the highly charged political and administrative environment surrounding India’s largest medical entry portal.
