The anticipatory bail plea by a paying guest accommodation operator Shubham Tyagi was rejected Wednesday before the Patiala House Court, forcing his surrender. Meanwhile Sudhanshu, his partner, was arrested on September 9.
Also known as Aviation Police Detention Centre (AVIDET) Officer Amit Goel confirmed the arrest of Tyagi, who has been the sixth person taken aback in the case. Delhi Police then requested the Patiala House Court for two days’ time to take Tyagi and Sudhanshu into custody to further investigate into the case so that investigators could question the two accused jointly.
As told by police, Tyagi was running a paying guest house in the building located in South Delhi, and had rented out one floor in the building to its owner Hariram Gupta. He had been missing after the incident and searches were reportedly carried out at various places in a bid to find him.
The latest comes just one day after investigators said they were looking into Sudhanshu’s mobile-phone logs and connection with social media to establish what happened to him right after the collapse took place. His telephone has been submitted for forensic analysis, said police.
A building, reportedly being repaired and extended at the South Campus of Delhi University, in Satya Niketan near the varsity collapsed on Sunday.
Police has already captured PG owner Hariram Gupta’s son Mahesh, building contractor Sanoj Kumar, and PG operator Sudhanshu. Police pointed out that Gupta, 81, and wife Urmila, 75, are also under judicial custody.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, meanwhile, had placed on hold the qualification of South Zone Deputy commissioner Rakesh Kumar along with four engineers for disciplinary action.
Whether structural changes due to continued repairs led to the weakening of the structure and collapse is being investigated.
