Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday said that he’ll keep Bhabanipur Assembly seat in addition to Nandigram as he has won both in the recently held West Bengal Assembly Elections.

Expecting to interview him, Suvendu Adhikari, who has sworn as an MLA from the Bhabanipur Assembly seat, told reporters that he did not agree to represent two Assembly seats because that was not possible under election rules. He voiced this objection saying that he cannot take oath from the two Assembly Constituencies while he is the MLA of a third one namely Bhabanipur.

Adhikari’s move ensures the Nandigram election district would now become the venue for a by-election in which a new legislator will be elected. The BJP chief also said the party would be finalising its plan and candidate for the bypoll soon.

The move coincides with the success of Adhikari who had won two Lok Adhas temperatures from Bhabanipur and Nandigram in the state polls, bolstering his political pedestal in the state. His decision to keep Bhabanipur is being taken as a political statement as the locality plays a significant role in the political picture of West Bengal.

In the recent times, a similar sight was seen in the state of Tamil Nadu where C Joseph Vijay the chief minister of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) got victory in both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. Later, Vijay resigned from the Tiruchirappalli East and kept Perambur according to the election law.

The upcoming Nandigram by-election could prove to be of immense significance given the political weightage of the district and Adhikari’s norms in the area,’ say political watchers.
