Around Rs 40 crore worth of narcotics and drugs were recovered from a truck at the Inter-State bus terminal (ISBT) in Garchuk area of city Guwahati in Assam and two individuals arrested, officials said.
The operation started after police got intelligence about a hawala reconciliation movement of a huge quantity of drugs originating from Manipur was passing through Assam on the way to other parts of the country. After only a short pursuit the teams of Police stopped the car near the ISBT.
During the initial search of the truck it looked empty, said West Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police Balin Deuri. But a thorough investigation revealed a hidden compartment in the car that officers went on to locate.
Police later found about 1.5 lakh tablets in 15 bundles and some cases of soaps which were believed to contain suspected heroin drugs.
Abdul Qadir, Sariful Islam, both of Goalpara district in Assam, were arrested in relation to the seizure.
A case has been registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police are questioning the accused to gauge the origin of the consignment and its intended destination and to find out other people allegedly in the trafficking network.
It is believed that the seizure would help in gaining intellegence on the route followed by the accused person who is suspected to be a drug trafficker, for taking narcotics from Manipur to Assam and then to other parts of the country.
Authorities continue their investigation to uncover the entire network responsible for the alleged drug shipment.
