Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s new CM C Vijay Joseph on Wednesday comfortably won the confidence vote with a striking 144 votes in his favor cementing his position as the CM.

The biggest factor behind Vijay’s decisive floor test victory was the support extended by 25 rebel AIADMK MLAs whose backing significantly boosted the numbers for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government and eased concerns over its stability.

Thanking all the allies who extended their support to his government, Vijay said that this is not a horse-trading government but a government which is going ahead at the speed of a horse.

Former CM and party did not participate in the voting. Staging a walk out, he said, “There should be a secular govt. Almost 65% people have rejected Vijay as CM. The majority of them didn’t vote for him. How long will this government last is what the people are thinking about,.”

Meanwhile, reacting strongly to the cross party voting, AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami accused the rebel MLAs of betraying the party. EPS said the MLAs had gone “in the wrong direction” and claimed they had acted deliberately for “personal gains”. He stated that they should not have contested elections under the AIADMK banner if they intended to go against the party’s stand.

TVK emerged as the single largest party to win the election in its first attempt and dethrone the DMK party and relieve Tamil Nadu from its Dravidian era rule. He first secured only 107. Subsequently cross party support helped him attain the given number by the governor thereby helping him stake claim of the government.
