Delhi Police has denied allegations of using lathi-charge against protesters at Jantar Mantar following several videos that went viral on social media alleging that protesters were being beaten with a lathi by police marching in the area as part of the Campaign for Justice and Peace (CJP).
The videos soon spread like wildfire, and there were rumors that officers used force in dispersal efforts at the event.
Delhi Police issued a statement via their official Twitter and Facebook handles that raised their voice against the allegations, saying there was no force used by them nor any unlawful detention of any protester during that incident.
The police said in its statement, “Some segments from media have mentioned sporadic use of violence/detentions at Jantar Mantar by Delhi Police.”
Additionally, the force, which warned against the spread of rumour and misinformation on social media, called on the population to cooperate with security measures to ensure public safety and tranquility and the preservation of peace in and around the protest area.
Delhi Police further asked everyone to refrain from being misled by unverifiable claims and reminded people that things are under control at Jantar Mantar.
This clarification comes as there has been a lot of discussion about the protest on social media and several videos have been circulating and being discussed by users.
There are no reports of any violence at the demonstration or by police and complaints are that police officers acted within official procedure and police regulations to ensure order and public safety.
