The Nagpur MLC election results have triggered a political war of words in Maharashtra, with the Congress targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after securing a surprise victory in the constituency.
The controversy was further fanned when BJP leaders taunted the Congress for failing to win any seats in the polls for the Maharashtra Legislative Council. On Wednesday, Modi himself moved into the fray and joined Fadnavis’s social media post, which appears to have been of the ‘Congress is a blank’ variety.
The outcome, however, was quite surprising as Congress won the seat at Nagpur, driving the Congress adversaries to react against their political opponents.
Congress Targets Fadnavis Over Deleted Post
The Maharashtra Congress did not hesitate to respond to Fadnavis, soon after his post was reportedly deleted after the shock verdict.
The state Congress, in a tweet on X, slammed the Chief Minister for making premature claims, particularly as final results have yet to be announced. The party ridiculed his now deleted posting, calling it “a boastful statement that got him in trouble.
Congress leaders also lambasted Modi, who earlier attacked the party for its performance in the polls.
Opposition MVA has Reason to Celebrate
The state’s larger results were also good for the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which won 3 of 5 Maharashtra seats it contested.
The result provided ammunition to the opposition in the fight against the ruling BJP, in the aftermath of which their leaders had taunted the Congress publicly about its performance.
The Nagpur win has now turned into a political face-off for the BJP leadership, which now has to face the Congress’ attacks on its promises to the voters and the uncertainty of elections.
The exchange is likely to further add to political tussle between the two in Maharashtra.
