US Vice President JD Vance called Iranian officials, though he chalked up the call as being mostly about medical aid, according to US President Donald Trump.

Vance wrote in a report on Wednesday to Iranian official Mohsen Rezaee in what appears to be an attempt at a resumption of peace negotiations. Trump says he could resume aerial assaults on Iran after the upcoming US midterm elections in November.

Trump Says Letter Focused on Medical Assistance

On Wednesday, Trump has told reporters he did not order Vance to resume peace talks. He did confirm, however, that he had approved the vice president’s approach of contacting Tehran.

Trump said that the conversation was about medical care for those in need. He said he had been asked for his feedback prior to making the call, and had agreed to the move.

The President’s comments indicate that there may be some level of dialogue going on between the two countries, even as the rift between Iran and the United States grows.

Iran Conflict Continues Amid Military Buildup

The war, which is in its 8th month, is yet to show any sign of any possible conclusion. Washington has continued to send more troops into the area, including a third aircraft carrier group en route to the Persian Gulf.

That leaving the future of the conflict up in the air, Trump is reportedly considering new attacks on the Islamic Republic.

In this background, speaking about a letter from Vance is another indication that Washington and Tehran may be undertaking new efforts to seek a new round of political engagement. But exactly what the talks will include and what effect they’ll have on the negotiations has yet to be determined.

At the moment, the U.S. administration seems to be preparing for yet another military response to Iran, while trying to make some efforts at keeping in touch with Iranian officials.
