Chandigarh: A new president of the BJP has been appointed in Punjab. Former Barnala MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon has been appointed state president by the party high command. The BJP has also announced the names of its state presidents in three more states. Elsewhere, Harsh Malhotra has been appointed in Delhi, Archana Gupta in Haryana, and Abhishek Deora in Tripura.

Kewal Singh Dhillon has been a highly active figure in Punjab politics, particularly in Barnala, for the past two decades. He was elected MLA from Barnala on a Congress ticket in 2007 and 2012, winning by a large margin in 2012. He also served as Senior Vice President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

However, he faced defeat in the 2017 assembly elections and the 2019 Sangrur Lok Sabha election. Subsequently, in June 2022, he left the Congress and joined the BJP. The BJP also nominated him as its candidate in the Sangrur Lok Sabha by-election.
