Six BJP councillors of Zone-10 of Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) in open revolt against their party’s zone chairman, Mr Sachin Meghani, have further heightened the political tensions within the party. Intense political tensions have surfaced within the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) when six BJP councillors of Zone-10 went on an open revolt against the party’s zone chairman, Mr Sachin Meghani. The councillors in the presence of each other, filed a written grievance with the senior party leaders and Mayor Meenal Choubey for the immediate removal of Meghani.
The councillors threatened to seal the Zone-10 offices and organise a vigorous protest and sit-in demonstration against the party leadership if they fail to take action soon. The internal rift has resulted in huge political chaos in the BJP’s local body in Raipur.
The councillors had alleged in their complaint that Sachin Meghani was interfering in the affairs of other wards and even compelled municipal officials to refrain from taking any action against illegal constructions. One of the key issues of dispute includes an alleged effort to block the local initiative to tackle an illegal hospital in the Boriya Khurd neighbourhood.
The controversy reportedly resulted in a ‘closed-door’ meeting of BJP leaders and public representatives which lasted for almost two hours. This has become a sensitive issue as Meghani is regarded as being on good terms with top BJP leader and MP Brijmohan Agrawal, political observers suggest.
Mayoral Meenal Choubey said that he had received the complaint from the councillors and the issue will be discussed before any decision is made.
In response to the allegations, Sachin Meghani stated that he hadn’t received any official communication concerning the complaint. He had said that he would meet directly with BJP organisation leaders, district president and mayor on the issue. Meghani also added that all the councillors of the zone are acting like a family and suggested that maybe opposition parties are working towards creating divisions within the BJP in the city in the coming days.
