The Bombay High Court on Wednesday approved the release of the controversial film ‘Hamare Baarah’ after the producers agreed to remove objectionable scenes, according to media reports.
A division bench comprised of Justice BP Colabawalla and Justice Firdosh Pooniwalla issued an order permitting the film’s release a day after determining that it does not violate the religious emotions of the Muslim community or distort the teachings of the Quran. The court recognized that the film, which has sparked great debate due to its theme of overpopulation, is focusing on the empowerment of women.
The first trailer of Annu Kapoor’s movie ‘Hamare Baarah’ sparked chaos, and the court considered it unpleasant as well. After watching Hamare Baarah, the bench declared that all problematic scenes had been removed from the film.
“The film is intended to inspire women. The film depicts a Maulana misinterpreting the Quran, and one Muslim guy objects to this in the scene. So this demonstrates that people should use their reasoning and not blindly follow such Maulanas,” the high court remarked.
The court ordered that the filmmakers should be fined Rs 5 lakh for publishing the trailer with uncertified footage. The entire amount would be donated to the petitioner’s preferred charity. “Violation was their vis-a-vis the trailer. As a result, you will be required to contribute to the petitioner’s selected charity. There will be a cost to be paid.” This litigation has provided the film with a great deal of free publicity,” the court stated.
Hamare Baarah was initially set to be released on June 7, but was later pushed to June 14. The new release date has not yet been revealed.
