Beijing: US President Donald Trump on 14th May arrived at Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping marking the former’s first visit to China after returning to the White House for the second time Both leaders participated in a ceremonial guard of honour and exchanged remarks before beginning discussions on trade, the Iran conflict, and the Taiwan issue. Besides the leaders, senior officials and business leaders from both the nations were also seen.

“There are those that say this is the biggest summit ever,” Trump told Xi during the public portion of their bilateral meeting. “They can never remember anything like it. I can say in the United States people aren’t talking about anything else.”

Avoiding taking questions from the media, Trump seems to be setting a differential tone with his Chinese counterpart. Both the leaders met for two hours and discussed business, trade and Iran war besides the Strait of Hormuz. It is being reported by a White House official that the two sides agreed to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to support free flow of energy.

“President Xi also made clear China’s opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use, and he expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China’s dependence on the Strait in the future,” the official continued. “Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.”

On the Iran issue, further details emerged that Trump sought Chinese intervention for a resolution, given China’s significant economic ties with Iran. The summit’s outcome on this front remained uncertain, with both sides weighing potential concessions and strategic interests.
