The world awaits with bated breath as the two-week cease-fire agreement between America and Iran comes to an end this Wednesday, April 22. In the absence of any news of an extension, the likelihood of another full-blown war becomes very real for the region.

Saturday saw President Donald Trump of the United States ratchet up the pressure as he stated that military action can be taken right away should there be no deal struck before the deadline passes. Addressing the issue at the White House, Trump did not waver from his “maximalist” approach as he threatened Tehran not to blackmail the country and assured the public that the blockade of Iranian ports will not be removed until some give-and-take happened.

Stalemate in the Strait of Hormuz

As things go worse on the front line, tensions have escalated even more on the strait as well. While Iran had once opened up to a possible opening of the vital passage, they now find themselves maintaining their total blockade of it.

As diplomatic efforts appear stalled, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a defiant rebuttal to Washington’s demands.

“Trump says Iran cannot make use of its nuclear rights but doesn’t say for what crime,” Pezeshkian stated via the ISNA news agency. “Who is he to deprive a nation of its rights?

While Pakistani mediators are reportedly scrambling to arrange a final round of emergency talks in Islamabad, the rhetoric from both capitals has turned increasingly hostile. With neither side willing to blink and the Wednesday deadline fast approaching, the world remains braced for a potential return to hostilities in a war that has already destabilized global energy markets.
