China: According to a study, China reeling under a massive grip of severe heatwaves and drought throughout summer is predicted to face sever drought-like situations in the coming years, impacting the socio-economic condition of the country.
The report warned if Beijing did not put a curb on its carbon emissions, it would see water scarcity in days to come.
It is learnt that 66 rivers including world’s third largest river, the Yangtze, have dried leading to the closing of shipment ways in sizable tranches of the crucial trade waterway. Over all river across 34 counties in China’s southwestern region of Chongqing dried up and crops in 10 districts of the region were poorly affected due to the harsh heatwaves.
China, the world’s second-largest economy, is now 90 days into its longest and most intense heatwave in more than 60 years, with about 4.5 million sq. km or nearly half of its total land area under the grips of extremely high temperatures, according to the World Meteorological Organisation.
