Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised India’s independent foreign policy approach and described Moscow’s interest to supply the Su-57 fighter aircraft to India. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin called India a sovereign nation that consistently makes decisions based on its own national interests rather than external pressure. “Our cooperation with India, just like with all other partners of ours, is not subject to the political environment,” Putin said.

According to the Russian president, India’s approach to international relations and defence procurement has remained consistent over the years, regardless of global political developments.

Putin stressed that India has the right to independently select defence systems and economic partners that best meet its requirements. He said New Delhi’s decisions are guided by practical considerations and national priorities, adding that India has always acted in a manner that reflects its strategic autonomy. “India remains free to choose the products and partnerships it considers most beneficial” the leader said.

The remarks came amid discussions over India’s potential interest in advanced Russian defence platforms, including the Su-57 fighter aircraft and the S-500 air defence system.

Putin revealed that Russia had previously proposed a joint development programme for the Su-57 fighter jet with India. Although the project did not materialise, Russia went on to complete the aircraft independently. Expressing Moscow’s interest to strengthening Russia-India defence cooperation, Putin said Russia remains prepared to supply the fifth-generation fighter aircraft to India. The Su-57 is one of the most advanced combat aircraft currently available.

His remarks come at a time when India and Russia continue to maintain close cooperation across defence, energy and diplomatic sectors despite evolving global geopolitical dynamics.
