Mohsin Naqvi also held a discussion with the United States Charge d’Affaires to Pakistan, Natalie Baker, on the current diplomatic activities to arrange the second round of the talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad. The gathering is in the wake of heightened international efforts to rejuvenate dialogue and de-escalate mounting tension in West Asia.
The two sides discussed in-depth on the changing situation in the region and potentially ways to revert both Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table, potentially within days, according to an official statement. Naqvi termed the negotiations as important and underlined the necessity of continued diplomatic efforts in order to reach a lasting solution.
The Pakistani minister was happy with the move by Donald Trump to extend the ceasefire, describing it as a step towards de-escalation. He was also optimistic that Iran would equally be receptive to the current peace initiatives. Naqvi also emphasized that the military leadership such as Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are in the process of trying to ensure a peaceful resolution.
The two emphasized the need to maintain diplomatic lines of communication, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the position of Iran in the extension of the ceasefire. The US has already indicated that it is ready to further negotiations, but Iran has not officially proven its stance.
The second of a series of meetings between Naqvi and Baker during the week was held under increased security in Islamabad, a measure of how important and sensitive the proposed talks were.
