The Ministry of External Affairs reacted with a warning to one of the controversial social media reposts made by Donald Trump that called the names of such countries as India and China derogatory. When asked about the matter, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded by saying we have heard some reports but that is all I can say about it.
The scandal ensued when Trump posted a transcript of a conservative talk show with Michael Savage on his social media site Truth Social. In the interview, Savage denounced US policies of birthright citizenship and claimed that some of them travel to the United States towards the end of their pregnancies to have their children acquire US citizenship. His comments targeting countries like India and China were offensive, something that led to backlash.
The remarks soon attracted international notice and criticism was not only in India but also in other countries. Iran, which is in its currently escalated tensions with the United States, defended India and China, claiming them as cradles of civilisation. The Iranian Consulate of Hyderabad had made a post on X stating that the country with a rich historical background cannot be gifted such statements indirectly attacking the position of Trump.
The episode is timed with the tense geopolitical relations, which also imposes another veil of sensitivity on the discourse of diplomacy. Although the MEA adopted a dignified strategy, the episode has generated a discourse on the pitch of international political rhetoric and how the relations between the two countries would be.
The measured response of India is observed to be an attempt of the country to balance the diplomatic relations amidst provocative statements of world leaders.
