Washington: Fresh tensions continue to simmer as ongoing negotiations for the Middle East conflict remain uncertain. According to reports, US President Donald Trump has asked for several amendments to a draft agreement negotiated by US and Iranian officials. The request is said to have emerged from the two hour Situation Room Meeting held on Friday .
There will be a deal. The imminence of it, we’ll see. We’re willing to wait so the president gets what he asks for,” the official said, adding that a resolution could come within days or take longer. “At the turn of the week, we hope to have something.”
Responding to local media, Trump defended American military action against Iran, arguing that US strikes had prevented Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. According to him, without US attacks using B-2 bombers, Iran would have obtained a nuclear weapon “nine months ago” and the region would look very different today.
Meanwhile, Iran claimed it shot down a US MQ-1 drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial waters. In a statement carried by state broadcaster, the IRGC said the drone had attempted to conduct a “hostile operation” before being detected and targeted.“It was immediately detected and targeted by the Revolutionary Guard’s modern defence missiles and shot down,” the statement read.
In terms of Strait of Hormuz, Qatar has opposed the idea of a permanent toll on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Al Thani said Doha would not support a lasting fee for transit through the strategic waterway. However, he indicated that Qatar could consider a temporary charge if it were used to help facilitate the reopening of the strait. This comes against the backdrop of Irans determination to formalise its control over the Strait of Hormuz, with lawmakers set to vote on legislation governing the strategic waterway. Iranian military authorities reiterated that all vessels must use routes designated by Tehran and obtain permission from the IRGC Navy, while warning against any interference in its management of the strait.
Elsewhere in Lebanon, Israeli forces demolished several houses in the southern Lebanese town of Dibbine.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday, May 30, said Washington is prepared to resume attacks on Iran if negotiations fail, while stressing that President Donald Trump still wants a deal that prevents Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
