Washington: The US Centre for disease control and prevention has classified the hantavirus outbreak as a level 3′ emergency response following its outbreak on the Dutch cruise. The classification is being described as rare and a unusual situation. The breakout is noteworthy as hantavirus cases spreading from people to people is uncommon.
A level 3 classification means the agency is coordinating with different departments to control the situation. Passengers across the US who returned from their journey on the Dutch ship, MV Hondius are being closely monitored.
Argentina, meanwhile is challenging claims that the deadly virus outbreak may have emerged there. Officials in the archipelago at the southernmost point of South America press the virus did not originate from the trash heap in Ushuaia as claimed by the national health officers. As per reports, the information was not officially contacted.
Juan Facundo Petrina, the province’s director of epidemiology, interacting with the reporters on Friday said, they discovered the purported Ushuaia connection via media reports. ” The Dutch couple — both of whom died — spent just two days in Tierra del Fuego during their four-monthlong trip through Argentina and Chile, he added, which “dramatically reduces the likelihood that the infection happened here, he added”.
The Health Ministry announced on Wednesday that it would dispatch experts from the state-backed Malbran Institute to trap rats at the Ushuaia trash heap and nearby areas and test them for the Andes strain of the hantavirus.
As of May 5, the WHO confirmed 5 infections with 3 deaths reported. More than 1000 passengers remain onboard with doctors being posted at the ship and health authorities monitoring passengers across the globe who dismebarked the cruise.
