Chennai: The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is proving to be the kingmaker following Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly elections, as its expected support to TVK that will push Vijay towards the designated number needed to form government. The VCK has managed to become an ideological bulwark of secularism and social justice in Tamil Nadu against Hindutva political forces and has played a key role in shaping the political stance of the Opposition alliance despite being a smaller player in the alliance in recent times.
According to sources, a letter of support is submitted to the Governor to invite Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to stake claim of the government. With this coalition, the party will attain the crucial majority mark of 118 in the 234-member assembly.
Political developments in Tamil Nadu have displayed massive drama further delaying Vijay’s swearing in ceremony. However, the actor-politician edged closer on Friday with CPI and CPI-M each having two seats decided to extend support. TVK president Vijay called on Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for the third consecutive day.
Meanwhile, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran accused TVK of submitting to the Governor, a photocopy of a “forged letter”, claiming it has the support of his party’s lone MLA-elect from Mannargudi constituency S. Kamaraj.
Outgoing chief minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin on Friday urged Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to take steps to ensure a new government is formed as per the Constitution.
“It is not only the need of the hour but also the most important task of democracy to form a new government so that the elected members of the Legislative Assembly can take the oath of office and take forward the welfare of the state,” Stalin wrote on X.
TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats initially. With Congress, CPI and CPM backing the party it has finally crossed the majority mark.
