According to Musk, SpaceX had not signed any long-term leases or agreements with the artificial intelligence startup, as there were just plans to use their Colossus AI training data center clusters for the next six months. Previously, it appeared that the two technological giants were going to enter into some type of long-lasting partnership.

“SpaceX has not committed to a long-term lease of Colossus, even though that may be what happens,” Musk revealed in a post made on his X account, which has been rebranded as X recently. He explained that the short term lease would continue for 180 days and would give both sides the opportunity to cancel the lease after 90 days from the start.

“The reason for it is that SpaceX has to be able to be flexible with its own computing capacity internally,” Musk elaborated. The clarification comes after regulatory filings related to SpaceX’s eagerly awaited upcoming IPO.

Earlier reports based on these filings suggested an enormous compute deal under which Anthropic would have access to more than 300 megawatts of power from the Colossus 1 data center located in Memphis, Tennessee. This deal was previously viewed by investors as a multi-year money maker, earning up to $45 billion until 2029.

Though the multi-year contract still may happen, Musk’s words shed light on the enormous premiums and price volatility associated with top-tier AI compute. Indeed, as tech companies race to expand their models, access to supercomputing clusters has become an essential choke point, making even companies like SpaceX very reluctant to part with their hardware resources despite huge rents.
