On Saturday, the Golden Temple complex witnesseda rise in security levels and controversial demonstrations to mark the 42nd year of the operation of ‘Blue Star’ as pro-Khalistan slogans were allegedly raised and posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale were hoisted by a section of the protesters.
It was held close to Akal Takht (the Temporal Head of the Sikh Religion). Those who were present at the event had banners of Bhindranwale, one of the key personalities involved in the events of Operation Blue Star in June 1984. Bhindranwale, the head of the Damdami Taksal, which was one of the leading Sikh religious institutions, has also passed away on this day.
The Indian Army took action in Operation Blue Star in June of 1984 to quell armed militants in the Golden Temple complex. The operation has been one of the biggest and most delicate events in modern Indian history and still it generates much feeling among various strata of society.
The Punjab Police had put in place a comprehensive law and order measures prior to the influx of people and possible law and order issues in Amritsar and no where else. Senior police officials checked preparations for the anniversary and close to 4,000 security personnel were mobilized to ensure peace and also to monitor around the shrine and surrounding districts.
Police said the precautionary measures were taken to make sure that memorial activities were not tainted with violence and the safety of the people was not jeopardized. Police remained pretty on duty all day for the visit and the devotional processions at the shrine.
This anniversary again spoke of the significance of the Operation Blue Star in history and politics, and the security forces were putting up a vigilant watch during the commemoration services.
