The Nagaland State branch of the Indian Red Cross Society will celebrate the World Red Cross Day on May 8 with a widespread social outreach program named Walk for Humanity, as part of this year international theme, United for Humanity. The day is celebrated in honor of the birthday of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Jean Henri Dunant.

The world red cross day is an international day that is celebrated to honour the legacy of Dunant and in the recognition of the unstoppable humanitarian efforts by the Red Cross volunteers during times of war, calamity and crisis. The theme of this year is a reminder to be united and compassionate in the face of escalating global issues, such as wars and the rising dangers to humanitarian workers.

IRCS Nagaland officials, led by the general secretary Akhale Khamo, said at a press briefing that the theme is to bring out the human element of humanitarian work where the beneficiaries and the volunteers are people who deserve dignity and care.

To change the trend of traditional indoor programmes, the state branch decided to conduct a walk in the community to improve awareness and involvement. The event will start at 7 am at the Red Cross Complex in Kohima and will move to strategic points in the town and culminate at the location of the Old NST.

Various organisations, including the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and other NGOs, have supported the initiative, which indicates the joint effort to endorse the humanitarian values and public participation.
