Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026 has been passed by the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The bill will now go to the President of India for ratification, following which it will come into effect.
The move was termed a historic achievement by the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who said that the legislation is a reflection of the vision of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP leadership to promote equality, social justice and public welfare.
The Chief Minister said that the law, if implemented, will give a uniform law system for citizens of all religions in the State. Under the new law, any practice involving “triple talaq”, “halala”, or “live-in relationships” that are not in good use would be dealt with, he said.
Yadav also noted that the UCC will expand the rights of women, giving them the right to inherit property and wealth equally with men. He also promised that no citizen would have a lesser legal status regarding marriage and adoption, inheritance and family law.
Use of love marriage, if the partners are of different ages or if one of them is married and having a live-in relationship with another, could lead to imprisonment of up to five years, the Chief Minister added.
In a scathing attack on the opposition in the assembly, Yadav said they wanted to divide the community in the name of religion and suggested that a common legal system be put in place instead of personal laws based on religion.
The BJP government termed the enactment of the UCC Bill a significant move towards ensure constitutional equality and women empowerment and uniform justice in Madhya Pradesh.
