New Delhi: The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has launched a comprehensive rainwater harvesting campaign to improve groundwater levels ahead of the monsoon season. The board has been designated as the nodal agency for this campaign. In the first phase of the plan, 500 new rainwater harvesting systems will be installed in government buildings. Additionally, approximately 1,000 existing, non-functional systems will be reactivated.
This campaign will be run in the buildings of the corporation, PWD, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, Directorate of Education and all other government departments. The Jal Board has clarified that work will be done in a coordinated manner to strengthen the rainwater harvesting system in all these institutions. It is worth noting that since the year 2001, it has been mandatory to install rainwater harvesting system on plots of 100 square meters or larger in the capital Delhi. After the implementation of this policy, thousands of rainwater harvesting structures were also installed in the city. However, over time, due to lack of adequate maintenance and regular care, many of these systems became inactive.
As of now, approximately 7,596 of the 9,148 government buildings in the capital have rainwater harvesting systems installed. According to the Delhi Jal Board, special emphasis is now being placed on making all these existing systems fully functional and effective, to maximize rainwater harvesting during the upcoming monsoon season and improve groundwater recharge.
Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh stated that the DJB will bear the initial cost of the project, which will later be recovered from the concerned departments. He informed that the tender process for all works is being initiated immediately and the works will be awarded by the first week of June 2026. The first phase of the campaign is targeted to be completed by June 30 to ensure maximum preparedness before the upcoming monsoon. Under this scheme, existing rainwater harvesting systems in Delhi’s government buildings will be activated and repaired, and non-functional structures will be reactivated.
