NEW DELHI – A landmark regulatory step was witnessed recently when the Union Government ordered the prestigious Delhi Gymkhana Club to immediately vacate the 27.3-acre large land parcel situated in the coveted Lutyens’ zone of the capital by June 5, 2026.

This eviction notice from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs comes as a shocker to one of the most prominent elite clubs in India. According to the official order, there was an invocation of a public purpose clause under Clause 4 of the lease deed, which states that the land, lying adjacent to the Prime Minister’s residence in Lok Kalyan Marg, was situated in a “highly strategic and sensitive area.”

Core Rationale Behind Land Acquisition

The reasons for land resumption outlined in the L&DO order were clear about the future course of action of usage of the critical land parcel:

Defence and Security: The Government made it clear that this huge plot of land is urgently needed for the development of defence infrastructure.

Governance Needs: The land is set to be allocated to meet urgent requirements of institutions and governance activities of public interest and are to be developed alongside the development of other government land plots.

Absolute Immediate Vesting: Due to the expiry of the lease that was made immediately effective, all the property including all historic buildings and fittings, as well as the sporting grounds, now vest absolutely with the President of India.

“Failure to comply with the stipulated deadline will result in taking possession according to the law,” stated a notice issued by L&DO. Copies of this notice were marked for the concerned authorities in law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order during the process of taking possession.  Club Demands Urgent Intervention of MoHUAFollowing this urgent development, the committee of Gymkhana Club called an urgent meeting of the General Committee (GC).
