Citizens of the national capital also struggled with the hot weather on Sunday as maximum temperatures were recorded at 42.1°C. Even though this was slightly lower than the season’s record of 42.8°C observed on Saturday, temperatures were still three points above average, and the capital is currently suffering a severe hot spell.

Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 42.1°C in Delhi, but other areas have reported even higher temperatures in the city. The maximum recorded temperature in the Ridge area was 43.5°C, making it among the warmest areas in the capital. Even though there has been a slight fall in the maximum temperatures, lack of any cool breeze and minimum temperatures of 26.2°C – two degrees higher than average – mean no relief can be expected overnight.

Yellow Alert for Monday

According to a notification by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather department has issued a “yellow alert” warning about continuing heat wave like weather conditions in the first part of the day on Monday. Temperatures are forecasted to be between 43°C to 44°C in some isolated areas. According to officials, the hot spell is being caused by dry northwesterly winds and solar radiation.

The health authorities have recommended to citizens to drink water in abundance and refrain from going out in the open between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Since the air quality is also poor (AQI 222), those who are sensitive should take care of themselves amidst such harsh conditions of heat and dust particles.
