New Delhi: After the Delhi Gymkhana Club received an eviction notice, another prestigious club is now facing a crisis. The Delhi High Court, in a major decision on a petition related to the Delhi Race Club in Lutyens’ Delhi, quashed the order that had stayed the “show cause notice” related to the eviction. This court decision appears to pave the way for the Delhi Race Club’s eviction from 84 acres of land. According to reports, the case relates to a highly valuable plot of land in Lutyens’ Delhi where the club has been operating for a long time. This court decision further clears the way for administrative action regarding the club’s land.
A bench of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia, while allowing the central government’s appeal, refused to grant the Delhi Race Club any major relief. The bench refused to uphold the April 26 order of a single judge bench that had stayed the eviction notice issued to the club. The court also lifted the stay on the show-cause notice issued to the Delhi Race Club regarding its proposed eviction from the 84-acre complex in Lutyens’ Delhi.
The bench clarified that the Central Government’s appeal is allowed and the single judge bench’s order of April 24, 2026, is set aside. That order restrained the Estate Officer from taking further action on the show-cause notice, which the court has now decided to vacate. It also revealed the basis for the notice issued by the Central Government on March 13, accusing the Delhi Race Club of allegedly occupying its premises in Lutyens’ Delhi. The Central Government had also stated that the land was required for a public purpose and had sought peaceful possession of the premises on that basis.
