New Delhi: Commuters in Delhi-NCR are facing the prospect of increased waiting time, crowded transportation, and widespread disruption of transport as one of the biggest ever commercial vehicle strike commenced today, May 21.
This three-day strike, organized till May 23, has been planned by a group of more than 68 transport unions with the AIMTC taking the lead in organizing this protest. Notable organizations like “Chalak Shakti Union” have lent their support to the strike and brought forth around 4 lakh taxi drivers along with auto-rickshaw and commercial vehicle drivers into this protest movement.
The unions made the top authorities in Delhi aware of their plans to conduct the strike in a formal notice which was delivered to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, CM of Delhi, Transport Minister, and Police Commissioner of Delhi. As per the information shared by the “Chalak Shakti Union”, this regional protest has been carried out in support of the nationwide stir being organized by the AIMTC. The core issue at the center of this strike is the revision of fares immediately.
The reasons for this lack of progress notwithstanding the huge spike in the price of CNG, petrol, and diesel. In just the last few days, there have been continuous increases in fuel prices that have made the price of petrol and diesel in Delhi skyrocket, causing enormous financial pressure to be exerted on the drivers who are trying to operate at bare minimums.
Apart from these stagnated fares, the other reason for the strike has been stringent environmental norms introduced by the AIMTC and UFTA. They have raised concerns about the unfair imposition of a huge hike in the ECC. Another area of worry has been the ban on older commercial vehicles into the NCR, which has been proposed by the CAQM. The drivers have also raised issues against taxi aggregators such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
