West Bengal Falta Assembly Seat Voting Live: Voting has started at 7 am in the Falta Assembly seat of West Bengal. Voting will continue till 6 pm. 285 polling stations have been set up. Long queues of voters can be seen at polling stations since morning. This time the Election Commission has doubled the security at the polling booths. Earlier, four soldiers were deployed at each booth. This time, eight soldiers will be deployed on duty.
More than 2.36 lakh voters are eligible to vote in this crucial re-election for Falta, being held on the orders of the Election Commission, including 1.15 lakh women.
The Falta assembly seat is considered a stronghold of Mamata Banerjee’s TMC party. However, TMC candidate Jahangir Khan suddenly withdrew his candidacy 48 hours before the vote. The contest is now considered to be between BJP’s Debangshu Panda and Congress’s Abdur Razzak Molla. Besides the Congress and BJP, CPI-M’s Shambhunath Kurmi, independents Deep Hati and Chandrakant Rai are also contesting the seat.
The deadline for filing and withdrawing nominations in Falta has passed. According to Election Commission sources, even though Jahangir Khan has announced his withdrawal, it is not possible to officially withdraw from the election. As such, he will still be considered a TMC candidate. The party cannot field another candidate.
The Election Commission has decided to deploy approximately 35 companies of central forces to ensure peaceful voting. This is nearly double the deployment compared to previous elections. Additionally, 30 quick response teams have been put on standby to respond to any incidents.
