The Assam government has passed a new policy, banning the use of Aadhaar for people above 18 years of age except for some groups, and exempting them for now. In Assam, the militants’ demands have been met by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a meeting of the State cabinet. In Assam, the decision has been conveyed by the Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma after a meeting of the Cabinet.
The Chief Minister has mutually informed that, in general, people older than 18 will not be allowed to register for Aadhaar in the new establishment protocol. But the excluded tribesmen and castes, and Tea Garden people, will get Aadhaar till March 2027.
In detail, however, the state government has yet to give guidance on how the order will be put into practice. More details on this process and what is required will be made available in the coming weeks.
In addition to the Aadhaar decision, the Assam Cabinet also approved a duly engineered “wanted” project to establish a proposed satellite city in the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) area. The project is proposed to assist with urban sprawl and infrastructure investments, as well as the expansion of the metropolitan area around Adelaide, the state capital.
Earlier, Sarma spoke at NITI Aayog’s meeting with Chief Ministers and senior officers of the northeastern states and said we need ‘Geographic Equity’. He said the focus of future development should be on achieving economic growth in all parts of the nation instead of limited to a few.
The Chief Minister also stressed that the Northeast has become a crucial and active part in policy-making processes in the country and, for this purpose, he highlighted the land connectivity, infrastructural development, peace program and regional integration works that have been carried out in the region in past years.
With the decision on the Aadhaar policy, it is expected that the issue would get a lot of attention throughout the state while the authorities work on implementing Aadhaar policy and explaining its effects on the residents.
