The toss for the first match of the three-game ODI series between India and Afghanistan has been delayed due to steady showers continued over the venue. While the intensity of the rain reduced briefly, the pitch remained fully covered and the outfield was still wet, preventing officials from proceeding with scheduled activities. However, the ground staff extended the covers to safeguard the bowlers’ run-up areas as light drizzle persisted around the stadium.

The series marks the first-ever bilateral ODI contest between India and Afghanistan. Team India enters the series after registering a comprehensive win over Afghanistan in the recently concluded one-off Test. Led by Shubman Gill, the hosts will be looking to carry that momentum into the 50-over format as they continue preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Team India will take on Afghanistan without several key players like Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya, who has been ruled out due to injury. Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested.

Veteran opener Rohit Sharma, who recently recovered from a hamstring injury suffered during the IPL 2026 season, is expected to play a crucial role in India’s batting lineup.

Afghanistan, captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi, have received a major boost with the return of veteran leg-spinner Rashid Khan. The star spinner had missed the one-off Test but is back in the squad for the ODI series.

The visitors will also be aiming to create history, having never defeated India in a One-Day International. Afghanistan will be eager to break that streak and register their maiden ODI victory against the hosts.

With rain continuing to hover over Dharamsala, players and fans alike await a window of clear weather to get the series underway.
