Spain won the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final clash with Belgium by a late winning goal, with substitute Mikel Merino, who won their place in the semi-final slot against France.
It was also a tight contest right from the off, as both sides looked to score multiple chances soon into the second half. Then, in the 30th minute, Spain finally managed to break the deadlock with Fabian Ruiz showing the most deft touch in the box with the rebound from a Belgium clearance.
Belgium however bounced back and made the match equal, just in time for half time. Charles De Ketelaere flew forward to head past the Spanish goalkeeper in the 41st minute and levelled the scores, heading the ball wide of Spain’s post.
The second half was a great off-centre display of football but both sides managed to maintain their fortification for most of the game. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made his learning curve debut in the final quarter, and Mikel Merino proved to be the difference.
Merino was able to come on as an 88th-minute replacement and understood the moment after just a couple of minutes to keep Spain ahead on the loose ball just inside the penalty area. Belgium then went to battle with no other equaliser to come, and no success in Spain’s disciplined defence.
In what is after a day of particularly interesting matches it has just hit the post, Spain has climbed up into the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they will play France on nail-biting pitch. Spain’s experience and tactical restraint and strong from the bench enjoyed another decisive impact as they pushed forward for a World Cup win yet again, with Belgium’s attempt coming to an end, despite their spirited effort.
