The painstaking process of recording the divine assets of the temple of Shree Jagannath, which dates back to the 12th century, is soon to move into another important stage. This was revealed by temple officials on Saturday, where they announced that the counting process for the ‘Ratna Bhandar’, i.e., sacred treasury, will be resumed on May 11 after a short break.

Inventory Process to Resume After Chandan Jatra Festival

The initial process of inventorying, which started way back on March 25, 2026, had to be suspended due to certain religious festivals. “As the Bahar Chandan Jatra festival ends this Sunday, we have decided to resume the inventory from May 11 onwards and till May 12”, said Arabinda Padhee, chief administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).

“The conclusion of the Bahar Chandan Jatra festival this coming Sunday has prompted us to conduct the stock-taking exercise on May 11 and 12,” said Padhee. The inventory, according to Padhee, would be conducted as per the SOPs issued by the Government of Odisha.

The stock-taking operation will mark the first time in 48 years that the royal treasure chest will be opened up for an exhaustive list. The stock-taking committee, which includes jewelers, goldsmiths, and representatives of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), will conduct the inventory using 3D Mapping for documenting bigger items. High-definition videography to record each step of the process. Color coding of storage for systematically packing valuables in specially designed chests based on the metal used. As of now, the team has managed to inventory the ‘Bahar Bhandar’ (outer treasury) and ‘Chalanti Bhandar’.
