New Delhi: The Delhi Jal Board is preparing a new policy to address the water shortage in the capital, Delhi. Under this policy, the use of treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) will be increased to maintain greenery in parks and for construction purposes. Pravesh Verma stated that under the new system, the use of treated water will be made mandatory in all government construction projects. The government aims to reduce the pressure on potable water and ensure greater use of alternative water sources.

He said that this treated water will also be made available for private construction work. Citizens and private agencies will be able to purchase it at relatively lower prices, which will reduce freshwater consumption in construction activities. Under the policy, there is also a plan to increase the use of treated water for irrigating parks and green areas.

According to information, there are thousands of such parks in Delhi where large quantities of water are required for regular irrigation and sprinkling. Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has made arrangements for water in more than 100 of its parks, but there are also a large number of local parks whose maintenance is the responsibility of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA).

According to officials, many RWAs are using potable water to maintain greenery in parks. In some areas, insufficient water is causing trees, plants, and grass to dry out. Several RWA representatives reportedly raised this issue with Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma recently. They demanded alternative water sources for irrigation in parks, to prevent wastage of potable water and preserve green areas.
