Meghalaya honeymoon murder accused Sonam Raghuvanshi was granted bail on Friday by the Supreme Court, which has agreed to further prod into the matter.

Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu said that Sonam was released from jail and didn’t need a bail to be suspended. However, the court raised queries over the High Court’s order and also gave a notice to Sonam while deciding to keep a check on the proceedings of the trial.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing in the interest of the Meghalaya government, said the cases against Sonam were serious and the bail should have been denied because the ‘technical grounds’. He also mentioned the realtor murder in Pune in the hearing in the case of Siya Goyal.

In June last year, Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested for the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon trip in Meghalaya.

The couple was married on May 11 and they went to Sohra on May 20 for honeymoon, later lost them on May 23. Raja was found dead on 2nd June and a murder investigation was conducted.

A Shillong trial court in April granted bail to Sonam after almost a year in judicial custody, noting that the investigating agency had not communicated and given proper reasons for her arrest. The court pointed out that there were several police documents that had referred to Section 403(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, whereas the correct section to refer to is Section 103(1) which deals with the offence of murder.

The Supreme Court will now conduct hearings on the matter, and closely monitor the ongoing trial.
