In its latest circular issued to the Indian community in Bangladesh, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka has appealed not to venture out of their homes if possible since the countrywide hartal has begun. The strike is in relation to general displeasure concerning the government’s implementation of job quotas. Hence, given the existing situation in Bangladesh, persons of Indian origin and Indian students living in Bangladesh have been advised not to venture out and commute anywhere beyond their living places, as advised by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
This advisory was issued at a time of various protests in Bangladesh, where demonstrators took to the streets calling for the phasing out of the job reservation, as they refer to it, since it is deemed to favor the ruling party members. The demonstrators claim that the quota system that was established to award serious high-paying governmental jobs extinguishes social equity and prevents deserving persons from being hired. The controversy has, therefore brought a lot of unrest in the country, calling for a strike across the country.
The High Commission has offered contact numbers for emergency purposes because some Indians are facing one issue or another in this unstable environment. Thus advising the Indian community in Bangladesh to be safe and careful during these difficult times.
Besides the advisory, the High Commission may have stepped up the interaction with local law enforcement agencies to secure the Indian people. It is a developing situation, and it continues to enforce an advisory from the Government of India that the people in India are advised to access and acquire authorized geographic updates using credible media resources and High Commission instructions.
The current problems in Bangladesh are rooted in the polity, whereby citizens revolt against measures they consider to be unjust. Preventive strategies suggested by the Indian High Commission are targeted at protecting its citizens during the time when the hosts are going through major internal transformations.
