Rajya Sabha MP and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has come down heavily on the delayed justice in a rape and murder case of a Kolkata-based doctor. In a letter to West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Singh appealed to them to ‘act fast and firmly’ to get justice for the victim and her family. Criticizing the slow pace of investigation into the matter, Harbhajan Singh described the incident as something that “has jolted the conscience of all of us. ”
As for the key points differentiating Singh’s appeal, the latter underlined women’s protection and respect as a thing that cannot be compromised. He was very passionate in blaming those who committed this wicked act, saying that they should be punished to the fullest of the law, stressing that this should be done to send a very big signal. “Only then can we start rebuilding the confidence we have lost and guarantee that a crime like this will not repeat itself,” Singh noted when emphasizing the possible perspective of constructing a society in which every woman would feel protected and become a shield for others.
The former Indian cricketer also posted it on social media site X. However, he refuted sending it to the Government of West Bengal and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and said he was sending the letter to the Indian citizens. He spoke on behalf of the public to support doctors in their cry for justice, equal justice for all and crusade for change.
Therefore, Singh has called on the West Bengal government and the CBI to act quickly and forcefully, pointing out that time is ripe to act. He also informed us that such mishappening is not restricted to West Bengal only but is observed all over. The incident has become quite frequent and becomes a part of news programs. Singh wondered why decisive action is not adopted more than it is.
