Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has now searched and seized the house of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and ‘prime accused’ of embezzling money from a state-run medical college hospital. This move is undertaken in light of the rising concern in the institution, especially after the gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, which has led to protests across the country.
Central agencies have recently amped up investigations into claims of financial misconduct that are said to have occurred at RG Kar Hospital while Ghosh was in charge. The fact that the ED’s raid is aimed at searching for corruption related to the management of the hospital is not wrong. At the same time, Sandip Ghosh has lodged an application with the Supreme Court against the recent ruling of the Calcutta High Court, which asked for conducting a CBI investigation concerning the alleged acts of the financial scam by the defendant. The apex court has listed his petition for hearing on September 6, and the bench will comprised of Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud.
In a similar development on Tuesday, simultaneous with the financial misappropriation probe into RG Kar Medical College, a Kolkata court remanded Ghosh and three others to CBI custody for eight days. Although the CBI had asked for a 10-day remand, they were given eight days, and the court said it wanted to explore more into what the agency called a large nexus of corruption. The CBI arrested Ghosh on Monday night, and first, he was allegedly beaten up at the court the next morning while being produced there.
Ghosh has been indicted under a number of provisions of the Indian Penal Code, such as sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating and dishonesty), as well as sections violating the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The CBI had begun interrogating him since August 16, asking him about the financial scam along with the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
