Mumbai Police has arrested a man suspected for conducting a big matrimonial fraud with over 25 women from various states.

Police identified that the accused is Anuj Kumar Chandraprakash Trivedi, he was alleged to dupe women financially by swapping them through matrimonial websites as he depicted himself as a desirable suitor. The accused were allegedly mainly divorced women and women in “difficult-harboured” circumstances. They say he notified women that he was actually a female using several different identities in order to develop relationships with women over a long time, and that he helped to fabricate and lies about some extremely personal elements and some emotional manipulation.

Police said the accused has been suspected of engaging in marriage in various states, such as Delhi, Noida and Maharashtra, along with several women. This fake scheme could have caused financial harm worth several crore to the government, officials suspect.

The cases were initiated following a complaint which was lodged at Nayanagar Police Station during the year 2022. The complainant stated that the accused responded to a matrimonial advertisement which was looking for a suitable man and ultimately married the woman after presenting himself with another name.The complainant claimed that the accused had appeared for a matrimonial advertisement and went ahead to marry the woman after giving her another identity.

Police reportedly had in its possession the names of another two individuals during the probe – Ajay Agrawal and Jayprakash Rameshchand Gupta with the alias Ajay Santosh Singh. He was identified by authorities and was arrested at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh on 24 May.

More investigations are continuing to uncover the extent of the alleged fraud and to find more victims, officials said. Banking activity and other documents relating to the case are also being reviewed. Investigations continue and the police have called on anyone with “information pertinent to the investigation” to assist investigators.
