The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested an old-timer judge, Giribala Singh, on dowry harassment allegations and for the involvement in the suspicious death of Twisha Sharma, in a significant turn in the case.
In the background, the CBI officials were seen entering Giribala Singh’s flat in Bag Mughaliya Extension, Bhopal, before taking her into their custody, according to reports. The court had earlier cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to her.
Earlier, on May 15, an anticipatory bail was accorded to Giribala Singh, who now has her son Samarth Singh also on the bail, in connection with dowry harassment. Lawyer by profession, Samarth Singh was lodged in CBI custody after the agency took a formal berth from the Madhya Pradesh police earlier this week to initiate a probe.
On Wednesday, the High Court granted applications for obtaining anticipatory bail for the cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh. Justices Devnarayan Mishra said in a lengthy 17-page order that, in the light of facts of the case and allegations made against her, the anticipatory bail granted by the lower court was “abused” and could be set aside.
The CBI officially re-registered the FIR on Monday after taking charge of the investigation regarding the death of Twisha Sharma, allegedly found hanging from an ornamental window in her matrimonial home in Bhopal on Tuesday, 12 May.
Attorneys for Twisha Sharma’s family said in court documents that she had been mentally harassed by her husband, a suspicion that has been strong since his death, and was “badly stuck” in her conjugal home. Further, petitioners argued before the High Court that after securing anticipatory bail, Giribala Singh had sought to manipulate the evidence in the case.
The case has become a public matter as a retired judge has been involved, and it is claimed that he interfered in the investigation. Amid its probe into Twisha Sharma’s death, the CBI is now likely to carry this interrogation of the accused further into the incident.
