In protest against a thermal plant in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, the villagers allegedly hurled stones at Police and Administrative officials, injuring two Police Officials including one female officer, leading to a major confrontation. Later on, some of the protesters were detained while police sought to bring peace to the area.
Unrest came in Palsodi village, where locals have been protesting against plans to designate an investment zone which reportedly involves around 1,700 hectares of land in five villages. The agricultural land use and residential areas in the planned location could be affected by the project, leading to a persistent protest against the plan.
A big administrative team, along with police officers, was present at the site and were actively engaged in an encroachment drive, officials said. News of the raid reached people, and bodies of work started to form, tensions quickly rose. Things went out of hand as stones were said to have been thrown at the police and government officials.
Two officers, one female, were injured in the clash, and they were rushed to hospital for treatment. To that end, officers pulled back the crowd by force, including the use of tear gas, police say.
Several people were arrested after the incident and security forces were on duty in the area to stop any further arson. The standoff has raised the region’s tensions even further as the situation is closely watched by authorities.
One of the most significant concerns among the residents is the acquisition of their land and its impact on their livelihood, with the proposed industrial project being a subject of debate. An investigation into the incident and surrounding circumstances with the protest continues.
