Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, who was an ally of Congress during Last year’s State Assembly elections, has said that the Congress is poised to win the By-Election to Datia in the presence of such mushroom public gathering, which has raised public unhappiness with the ruling BJP government.
In an affidavit to the media, Singhar said that in times of a big turnout, it is normally a sign of anti-incumbency sentiment. He announced here that the voters of Datia are getting ready to cast votes for the Congress candidate.
“I went personally to Datia and spoke to people, and there was a sense of fear in the minds of the people. The citizens just want to live free of that fear,” Singhar said.
Polling started at 7am in the Polling Station of the Datia Assembly by-election and ended at 6pm. As midnight approached, the electorate support had amounted to 50.26% by 1:00 PM.
BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari is engaged in a final tussle with Congress’ Ghanshyam Singh and Azad Samaj Party’s Damodar Yadav in the bypoll.
172,759 voters, comprising 174,661 general ballots and 2,098 postal ballots, cast their votes at the previous election to Assembly.
Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti had garnered 88,977 votes or 50.34% share of votes while senior BJP leader Narottam Mishra, which garnered 81,235 votes and 45.96% votes.
The BJP is feeling hopeful of winning the key seat, followed by Congress, as the Election Commission of India (ECI) has indicated that the vote turnout would enable them to realize the shift in electoral fortunes.
