New Delhi: In his warning to the media on Sunday, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan made it very clear how worried he is about the meteoric rise of the satirical digital organisation called “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP). He warned that India’s youth would be at risk of losing sight of positive national aspirations and “following the cockroach” if the media organizations do not focus their coverage on success stories.
Addressing the 140th anniversary celebrations of the Malayalam-language newspaper Deepika in Kottayam, Kerala, the Vice President pointed out the urgent necessity for “constructive journalism” in order to help shape the minds of young Indians. “It is important to report positive things in good manner so that youngsters get correct news,” Radhakrishnan pointed out. “Otherwise, they will lose interest and follow ‘the cockroach’.”

While standing firm in support of freedom of speech, the Vice President criticized the trend among contemporary media outlets to give excessive, immediate attention to the latest internet sensations. Hinting at the recent surge in the CJP phenomenon’s social media popularity, he suggested that discussions and debates ought to focus on more serious and meaningful topics rather than online ephemera. “If something is good, people will keep on seeing it good in the coming weeks, 10 days or a month,” Radhakrishnan said. “They don’t know anything about it, all of a sudden it became so popular. It cannot be.”
Origins of the ‘Cockroach’ Phenomenon
The CJP, or the “Cockroach Janta Party,” was an internet sensation spawned by the controversy surrounding comments made by CJI Surya Kant recently. While the Supreme Court chief justice clarified that he used the term “cockroaches and parasites” only with regard to those entering the law profession with forged certificates, the online community immediately seized the phrase.
Launched by an expert in political communication, CJP has quickly turned into a widely popular outlet for youth agitation against various burning topics, such as:
- The systematic leakage of test papers (e.g., NEET-UG scandal). Youth unemployment.
- Flaws in the national education system.
Vice-President summed up by advising the media representatives to remember that as India aims to be developed country by 2047, journalists should serve as instruments of change and focus on stories about scientific achievements, community work, and human accomplishments rather than ephemeral web sensations.
