Marking a profound personal and strategic move in bilateral relations, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Rome on Tuesday evening (local time), thus concluding his much-publicized global tour that involved visiting five countries. Right from the start, the visit generated a lot of buzz among international social media users. In welcoming her Indian counterpart, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni gave a very personal touch to the event, hosting the leader to a private dinner and taking him to a tour of Rome’s most recognizable monument – the Colosseum.

Posting a photo of herself with PM Modi on the stands of the ancient amphitheater on social media platform X, PM Meloni made sure to highlight the good rapport between the two leaders. “Welcome to Rome, my friend,” Meloni wrote in her viral post.

As for PM Modi, he took to social media to comment on the meeting with his Italian counterpart. “After landing in Rome, met PM Meloni over dinner and then visited the iconic Colosseum,” Modi tweeted. “We exchanged perspectives on various issues. Looking forward to our discussions today on how to enhance India-Italy relations.”

The meeting comes after PM Modi’s diplomatic tours of Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the UAE, and it is considered a landmark in Mediterranean-Asia relations. Aside from the obvious camaraderie that characterizes the two leaders, they will engage in tough bilateral talks. The talks are expected to revolve around reviewing the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 and the fast-tracking of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). With bilateral trade flourishing, the cordial welcome at the Colosseum portends positive relations during the high-level talks.
