New Delhi: On Sunday, March 1, 2026, India’s Indira Gandhi International (IGIA) airport in Delhi became a miniature of the current global geopolitical scenario as the worsening crisis in West Asia compelled the cancellation of at least 100 international flights. The cancellation of 60 outbound and 40 inbound flights resulted in thousands of passengers being stranded, thereby reiterating the vulnerability of the global air network in the face of an unstable West Asian scenario.

The air traffic crisis was brought about by the worsening crisis in the Middle East, which witnessed military strikes by the US, Israel, and Iran. The shutting of air corridors in Iran and the Gulf Region resulted in the grounding of flights to the West. For the second consecutive day, Air India and IndiGo, along with other prominent carriers, were compelled to cancel flights to European and North American destinations such as London, Frankfurt, and New York, as well as Gulf destinations.

Chaos on the Ground
Though the cancellation of flights was announced in advance, the large number of cancellations resulted in a bottleneck. Delhi Airport issued an advisory at 8:00 AM today.

The Scene
Long queues were witnessed in front of ticketing counters as passengers sought alternative flights.

The Impact: Travelers planning to make critical connections in Europe and the U.S. found themselves stuck in Delhi, and many of them were frustrated by the lack of immediate alternatives in light of the widespread nature of the airspace restrictions.

Airline Response: Air travel companies are being compelled to divert long-haul flights to other, safer airspaces, thereby increasing flight times and operational costs.

A Wider Crisis

The situation in Delhi is a microcosm of a larger national and regional trend. In total, almost 350 flights were canceled in India on Sunday alone. The Ministry of Civil Aviation and the DGCA are in close touch with the airlines to mitigate the impact, and passengers are being advised to check the flights electronically before reaching the airport. But in light of the extensions to March 2nd, a normal flight schedule can only resume in light of a stabilized West Asian horizon.
