To handle the expected traffic increase of tourists on the New Year festivities, the officials of Maharashtra in the Raigad district have imposed a temporary ban on the transport of heavy and oversized vehicles on major highways and arterial roads. The move will ensure that there will be no heavy traffic congestion in such tourist spots like Alibag, a renowned beach resort off Mumbai.
The order was made by District Magistrate Kishan N. Jawale after the recommendation of the Raigad Superintendent of Police. The provision of the Motor vehicles act will keep the restriction in effect on 8 am on the date of December 31 up to midnight on the date of January 1. According to officials, the move was required to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic and safety of the population in the period when the number of people at the holiday destination was highest.
The administration says that not only do the year-end celebrations cause congestion on roads in the city, but they also severely impact on the transportation of emergency services such as ambulances and fire brigades. The objective of the ban is to minimize the threat of accidents and prompt provision of key services.
The restriction has however been excluded to vehicles that deliver necessities. These are transport involving milk, petrol, diesel, cooking gas, medicines, oxygen, vegetables, water supply, fire services as well as ambulances.
It will prohibit some important road sections such as Kharpada–Khashedi on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66), Mangaon-Tamhini Ghat to Dighi on NH-753(F), Karjat-Palasdhari via Khopoli-Pali Phata to Wakan on NH-584(A), Vadkhal to Alibag on NH-166(A), Chowk Phata to Karjat (State Highway), Alibag to Murud and
It was observed that Raigad is a large tourist destination as well as a significant industrial area. Christmas and New Year holidays are the periods when people travel a lot, as school holidays and traveling at the time are very high.
