On the question of how the war in Ukraine will end, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if the occupied territories of Ukraine were ‘brought under the NATO umbrella,’ the fighting could stop. During the interview with the news agency, Zelenskyy reacted to the information that Trump might have a plan for the war, saying that Ukraine would give territory to Russia and join NATO in return.
Zelenskyy said that to put an end to the “hot phase of the war”, Ukraine needs to be granted NATO membership to the parts of Ukraine that are still occupied. But he stressed that any invitation to NATO must correlate with the internationally recognized Ukrainian borders, including the territories that are under Russian control now. After getting the NATO membership extension as it threatened, Zelenskyy said it would then use diplomacy to regain the remaining occupied territories.
He also demanded the signing of a ceasefire, saying that in order to achieve it, it is necessary to make Putin ‘not return back.’ Ukraine itself emphasized in this statement a sustainable peace agreement on the restoration of territorial integrity and sovereignty.
